We wish we would have heard about this picnic idea a few weeks ago.  Many of the Youngstown bloggers had already scheduled a field trip for Saturday, June 12.

National Get Outdoors Day Event

"31-mile Riverside Picnic Party"

When:          June 12, 2010 (sunup to sundown).
Where:          All along the Mahoning River!

The idea of this event is to get as many families, groups, and individuals of the Mahoning Valley as possible to picnic somewhere, anywhere, along the river on this day. The goal is to get folks to see the beauty of the river, so they will want that beauty embellished by the cleaning of pollutants from the river bed. We would like canoers, kayakers and motor boaters to cruise the river that day; and hikers and runners to cruise the shoreline. We picked June 12 because that is the second 'National Get Outdoors Day.'
The picnic is a do-it-yourself opportunity for families throughout the Valley to explore and reconnect with the mighty Mahoning River and the great outdoors by having a picnic anywhere along the river and its tributaries on that day.
The MRC has identified several locations that are available for public access, but participation is not limited to those sites. Adventurers might use the occasion to explore the river corridor or participate in the variety of scheduled programs listed below. 
Participant must make sure they have permission from the landowner if using private property. Or make use of the various public sites which have readily available parking. They include:
•   Foster Park at 3940 Damascus-Newton Falls Rd., Newton Township.*
•   Rotary Park at Ticknor Avenue and First Street, Newton Falls.   
•   Newton Falls Covered Bridge at Arlington Blvd. and Jay St., Newton Falls,
•   Canoe City at 74 N. Levitt Rd., Leavittsburg.*
•   Packard Park, Mahoning Avenue, Warren.*
•   Perkins Parks, Mahoning Avenue, Warren.*
•   Gould-Stewart Park at Main St. SW and Spring St., Warren
•   Nile Water Site at  N. Main St. and First St., Niles. 
•   Girard Dam/Viaduct  at Liberty Street, Girard.
•   B & O Station at 530 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown*
•   Walton Ave. Bridge at Poland Ave. and Walton Ave., Campbell/Struthers. 
•   Yellow Creek Park, SR 616 9Bridge St.) and Lowellville Road, Struthers.*
•   Lowellville Village Park* and Bridge, Water Street and River Road, Lowellville.
*Rest room facilities available at site.

The Mahoning River Consortium reminds all those taking part to make sure you remove and/or recycle any trash generated by your picnic. The MRC will have litter bags available at several sites for distribution to the public, and members will also try to be present at as many locations as possible to provide information about the river and its importance to the Mahoning Valley.
