Recently a Federal trustee and a land agent for Ohio Valley Energy company informed me that the average return on royalties for 40 acres with a Marcellus shale gas well is, ready, $50,000 per month!  So royalties on one acre is $12,500 per month and $3,125 for a quarter acre per month.  The average property tax for a vacant Youngstown quarter acre lot is $10.02 per year.  So if this math is correct, a vacant lot in Youngstown can produce $37,500 annually.  So in theory, every inch of ground in the Mahoning valley can service property taxes as they once did during the Steel mill days.  To insure this, cash collateral can be enforced rendering the county coffers full. I'm not sure if our local leaders fathom this.

I did not mean to "tout" the unemployment rate in Youngstown, sorry
if you got that impression from my post.  I was merely stating the
purpose for his visit.

Federal spending, in and of itself, is not going to help - however -
any government spending that creates JOBS for people in
Youngstown and the surrounding areas will help.

Youngstown gave Lake Milton (and the dam located there) back to
the state years ago, after the dam developed structural faults and
needed some major repairs (Youngstown, of course, did not have
the money to repair the dam).

It's a shame, because the dam could have been used to produce
electricity.

Now we have the Marcellus [sp?] shale deposit, with one of the
largest natural gas fields in the country - this would definitely help
Youngstown and the rest of Northeastern Ohio and Western
Pennsylvania with jobs, and by making heating costs go down
due to the abundance of local natural gas.

One can only hope that Youngstown jumps on this opportunity
to "get their piece of the pie".

I know what you said, I was really just responding to his purpose for this visit. It's one thing if our unemployment picture was one of the best in the state, but unfortunately it remains the worst in Ohio.

The local intelligentsia and the City leaders need to convey to the president that Youngstown can be ground zero for the green technology industry of the future.  The catastrophe in the gulf has brought to the forefront the urgent need to develop alternative energy.  With the knowledge of the regions great gas reserves guaranteed by V&M Stars massive investment into gas pipe production, Obama must make the investment into gas as an interim fuel source.  However, the Holy grail is our regions abundant resource of water.  While scientist grapple with the storage of energy from wind, solar and hydro, the storage of energy is already possible if we think outside the box and store WATER.  Ohio has done this long ago and only touched on this potential.  All the lakes in Ohio excepting lake Erie are man made.  Einstein taught us that matter and energy are the same thing.  Contemplate this, all the water we release into the Gulf has created a massive dead zone.  Retaining this energy is exponential and is the answer to green energy storage.  Of course harnessing our water is a part of aquaculture. Many today complain about the rain outside, I see it as perpetual motion.
