They use both sets of tracks in Lowellville and Struthers. Both sides of the river.

The former Pittsburgh Youngstown & Ashtabula Railroad (part of the Pennsylvania RR), now the Norfolk Southern Lordstown Secondary runs along the east bank of the Mahoning from above Niles all the way to Himrod Junction where it joins the Youngstown Line.  At Haselton the Youngstown Line crosses to the west bank.  The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad's Baltimore to Chicago mainline, now the CSX New Castle Subdivision, runs along the west bank more or less between McDonald and Bridge Sixteen (between Cedar Street and Center Street) where it crosses the river, then runs along the east bank through Lowellville.  The distance between the river and these rail lines may vary from a few feet to several hundred feet depending upon where you are at.

The CSX line is a heavily traveled corridor.  The Youngstown Line is a moderately traveled line which supports coal shipments between the Appalachian coal fields and the docks at Ashtabula.  The Lordstown Secondary is lightly traveled and serves the Lordstown plant and WCI Steel.  The Ohio Central Railroad also has trackage rights between Haselton and Pine Avenue in Warren to serve their customers.

Rick,

Are there still working R.R. tracks on BOTH sides of the Mahoning River, or are
they only on the southern bank?

I know the tracks that used to run through downtown are now long gone, but
was just curious as to whether there are any working tracks north of the river(?)

With all this talk of the V&M expansion and relocation of rail lines etc., is there a map showing all the properties that are being acquired and which rail line will be moved and where it will be relocated to?
