Trees With Plastic On The Trunks

My guess it's to keep the deer from damaging them. I think the bark gets ripped off while the deer try to remove the velvet from their antlers.

Weed whackers do similar damage but that's usually at ground level.

South Schenley between Kirk Road and Canfield Road

I noticed several trees in the middle have green plastic wrapped around their trunks. 
Does anyone know what this is about?
