What I would love to see is if by any chance a set of plans for the mansion are available to see just how the home was originally laid out.

I suspect that the information that the auditor has represents changes that took place over the years.

My friends former home had 22 rooms, but she was able to find a set of the original plans, and there were several changes over the years.

Also a plat map would be useful to see what other buildings were on the lot.

The Historical Society could be a good resource for plat maps.

I do have a photo of the Renner home on Pike Street and will post it at my Webshot site -- Ladynews500 -- when I locate it among the thousand pictures of Youngstown that I have.

Thanks for the Bio information.

George J. Renner, Jr. was born in Cincinatti, Ohio on
February 11, 1856.  He ws the son of George J. Renner, Sr.
and Seraphina (Appleman) Renner.

George J. Renner had 11 siblings: Lizzie, Rosa, Nora,
Emma, William are some of them (I couldn't find the
names of the others).

George J. Renner, Jr. grew up in Covington, KY.  His first
brewery was located in Wooster, Oh. and he moved to
Youngstown in 1884.

In 188o he married Emma Weaver of Covington, KY and they
had eight children: George, Emil A, Edna, Irene, Viola,
Florence, Ruth and Earl.

The family home was located at 209 Pike Street before he
lived at the Renner Mansion on Park Avenue.

According to a Youngstown Vindicator article that spoke about the Renner Mansion when it was built back at the turn or the century that is about what it cost to build. I wish that I still had that article, but in looking through my files I couldn't find it.

Mr. Renner spared no money in building the home, and as I said, imported not only quality materials, but also artisans to make it one of the most beautiful homes in Youngstown.

I suspect that the reason for the low price was [1] the condition of the building; [2] the neighborhood as it is today; and [3] the cost of restoration.

A friend of mine tried to restore the old mansion on the corner of Fifth and Tod Lane that was built by Bert Printz but nearly lost her shirt doing it, and ended up selling the home.

As I understand, it is currently occupied by an order on Nuns.

According to the Mahoning County Auditor's website, the home sold for $35,000 in 1984.

Hmmmm...

My guess at the 1984 selling price... maybe $25,000 to
$30,000??

jay

It was not sold for $50,000.  Think lower.  Do we have any other guesses?

kitten44505

This is just a guess, but could it be $50,000?

The home has 36 rooms and is 6600 sq. ft.  The mansion was last sold in 1984.

Guess what the selling price was in 1984?

A great picture.

I can remember being invited to a Christmas party there as a youth. The President of then Youngstown College lived there, and it was awsome.

Since then, after the University sold it, it was ravaged by splitting it up into apartments, and the magnificant mural that was there was taken down.

It's too bad that someone can't buy the home and restore it, but then with so many original fixtures lost, it would be a costly job.

The Renner Mansion today!

Does anyone have historical information on the George J
Renner, Jr mansion located on the corner of Park Avenue
and Michigan Avenue and across from Wick Park?

I used to live in The Parkway Tower apts as a kid and
was always curious about this beautiful old mansion.
I've always been interested in finding out about its
history and seeing photos of the interior before it was
chopped up into apartments.

I know it was added to the Historical Places register in
1976.

Also, does anyone have info and photos of the house that
used to stand on the opposite corner of Michigan Ave and
Park Avenue?  The house was torn down in the 1960's, as
far as I've been able to determine.
