Do the ordinances need to be changed?  Or do the current ordinances just need to be enforced?  I looked at the Youngstown City Code last night and one of the ordinances says it is illegal to own a pit bull in Youngstown.  On the police scanner I frequently hear calls for pit bulls running loose-what do they do with those dogs?

Pit bulls are not, by nature, vicious animals - typically it is abuse and neglect that makes them
turn mean.  These animals should be checked by someone who has canine behavioral training
to determine whether they pose any danger to people, then send them to an animal shelter
for adoption.  If the dog is a danger to people, or is mean, rabid, whatever - put the dog down.

Really quite simple.....that's how stray pitt bulls are handled here.  We had a couple cases where
the police were sent to am address with a menacing Pit bull and they put them down right then
and there.

I couldn't agree with him more. How many dog owners actually have up to date dog licenses? How many stray dogs are running the streets? BUT, this is a COUNTY issue and needs to be handled by the County Commissioners and the Dog Catcher's office.

Fourth Ward Councilman Mike Ray recently stated that Youngstown's dog ordinances have to be revised.
