The thing about additive manufacturing is that while the technology may be developed here, it is certainly not going to result in manufacturing jobs HERE.  That is the whole point, to be able to manufacture whatever you want wherever you are at and do it without people.  It is amazing that this valley is so excited about something that will not employ the valley's workforces to any large extent, and is actually designed to replace workers by the thousands.

All along we should have been fighting for traditional manufacturing, which is what we are good at.  But our congressional rep. has stabbed us in the back at every opportunity on that one.  He was for the light bulb ban that ultimately resulted in three GE lamp plant closures.  He was for environmental regs. that has closed down the Niles power plant.  Those were all good paying UNION jobs that had good benefits and retirement plans.  Then he turns around and blames Republicans for wanting to bust unions and harm the middle class!

Congressmen are REPRESENTATIVES, meaning they go to Congress to REPRESENT what we want.  In this valley we make things.  We always have.  Our REPRESENTATIVE is not conveying that to Congress but instead is forging his own path trying to lead us into his brave new world.  We don't need such a leader.  We can lead ourselves, thank you!

It would be interesting if some ecomists could research how much revenues the
Various businesses from YBI gave generated by their presence in Youngstown, both
In payroll and in taxes and other fees these companies pay annually.

That would give the taxpayers an idea of how much "bang for the buck" these
business ventures have give the area, ie:  "return on investment"

As far as the 3-D manufacturing, time will tell what the return will be on the
massive investment.  Unlike other YBI businesses, America Makes had some
Venture capital invested by the privace sector.

I began to meet former associates of YBI who have been very discouraged with the Evangelism that has been going on over there.  Another one is the Chamber, that is your next topic.

The only reason why government is needed to "kickstart" industry is to overcome the kicking that they give to industry through excessive taxation, regulations and interference.   The era of rapid economic growth and limited government involvement was no coincidence.

Very revealing Rick.  This article from Reuters, flies in the face of what I have always said about the Youngstown Incubator, YBI.  No one wants to hear about it, but it basically is a highly subsidized entity, that if one were to do accounting, I believe will honestly show that the nonprofit does not take the place of raw free enterprise.
Arguments exist from the left that government can kickstart industry.  Statistices will show provided, honest numbers, that only innovation from the private sector granted, public backing sometimes is the answer to America's woes.  I think it is a great injustice for YBI to give the new generations false hope that their road is the true one.  Capitalism although besmirched by the left is and has always been the answer for a better society.
