I was a member of St Paul's Lutheran Church on Fifth Avenue when I was very young.  I was sad
when they demolished the Strouss mansion that used to be attached to it...we used to play hide
and seek in it as kids - it was a huge house and very beautiful still, even in the 1970's.  I was
also sad when St. Paul's closed.

It is good that Park Vista/Park V bought the building, though.  I've read that it is used as a
community center for the elderly residents.

I once read online somewhere that Youngstown had about 120 churches in operation at its
peak.

This is truely sad. My family was members of Mahoning UMC when I was in high school, and active in its choir, and made many friends there. Mother also taught Sundyschool there at the time.
It's not an easy decision to put any church up for sale, and this is specially true of the members of this church.
The old timers went to a great deal of effort to build the church as it stands today, and of all the West Side congregations, Mahoning has an important place in Youngstown's history.

It's a sign of the times in Youngstown.

The Mahoning United Methodist Church is for sale.

This is what happens when the community ages and members of the congregation just move away.
