re; Scheibel was a Protestant

That explains why KKK would endorse him.

There was a Morris Scheibel who designed the Woodbine Apartments - he as a member of Rodef Shalom
congregation.

Charlie was a Protestant as were the members of his family. He was also a 32 Degree Mason that belonged to the Wick Lodge 481 Free and Accepted Masons.

Re: Scheible and his endorsement by the KKK, it's a bit unusual that the KKK would endorse
him, given their long record of racial hatred.

Scheibel is a Jewish surname....

QuoteNo matter who wins, the real losers will be the citizens of Youngstown, and we will see all the hard work that has been done to try to bring the city back go down the drain.

As it stands now, we will be stuck with this mayor for four years.   I'm all for going back to a two year term for the mayor.

All other opinions not withstanding, Burt DeSouza makes a very important point in his latest commentary, for this years election is without question going to be one of the messiest in the city's history and the city's future stands at the very edge of a cliff overlooking a gorge as deep as the Grand Canyon. No matter who wins, the real losers will be the citizens of Youngstown, and we will see all the hard work that has been done to try to bring the city back go down the drain.

When Charles Scheible was running for Mayor back in the 1920's some of the same issues faced the voters, for Scheible had the endorsement of the KKK, James Watkins, one of his opponents, the former Chief of Police was removed from office by orders of the Governor, and the Mayor was also seeking re-election in the midst of a scandal that forced the Governor to step in, (the same scandal that centered around Watkins) but fortunately there were four other candidates who were qualified to serve, unlike today.

For weeks leading up to the November election, the mud the various candidates were throwing at each other dominated the news, and it got so bad that a number of candidates stepped aside, for when the primary election was held, there were twelve candidates for Mayor running on the ballot.

In the end, Scheible won, and within hours told the KKK to go jump in the lake, and proved to be the best Mayor this city ever had.

Could we see the same end result today? That is a question that can not be answered yet, for there was a big difference between then and now. When Scheible was running the city was humming, but today, Youngstown is struggling with so many economic problems that must be overcome that it's unlikely that any Mayor can turn things around, and this is going to be the greatest challenge that any of the candidates will face.

The only mayoral candidates to attend the last forum at New Bethel Baptist Church were Kitchen, McNally and Moore.

Bellamy had someone giving his flyers to people entering the building but he did not attend the debate.
