I can see it now...Joe Bag of Doughnuts rushing home to pick up the tax return he forgot to take to work with him at 4:30, then after kissing the dog and putting the kids outside rushing over to the Post Office at the Belmont Giant Eagle post office to mail his return at 4:45 only to find that two dozen other Joe Bag of Doughnuts are in line waiting to mail their returns. What a hoot.

So the rush will be on prior to 5:00 p.m.

Local Post Offices Not Extending Hours on Tax Day



As more and more people turn to technology to file their tax returns, local post offices are not extending their hours Tuesday, which is Tax Day.

Most branches across the Valley will close at their normal times of 5 p.m. or 5:30 p.m.

Officials said those who choose to drop off their returns in one of the blue mailboxes pay close attention to the pick-up times so packages are postmarked for the April 17.

"Make sure you get to our office before 5 p.m., especially if you need to come to the window," said Youngstown United States Postal Service customer service supervisor Monica Mitchell. "We don't want a big rush at 5 p.m. We want to make sure everything gets processed through our clerks and done in a timely manner so it's not hectic for everyone pulling."

Any letter or package over 13 ounces needs to be handled by a postal clerk.

"Be here before 5 p.m.," said Mitchell. "If you can, try to get anything to us through the window. Between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. is really good. If you need to use our box out front, before 7 p.m."

Tuesday, April 17, is the last day to file your federal, state and local income taxes. 

It's an annual news story to watch all the people line up at the main post to mail their tax returns before midnight.
