In the day, West Commerce Street was a center for meat packing and bottleing works as well as hotels and saloons. The Cleveland Provision Co., Swift & Co. and Armour had large meat packing facilities on the north side of the street and Pabst Beer had a bottling plant on the south side of the street between Hazel and Chesnut Street.
