Suggetion:

I've found that when I need information, by sending an e-mail to the Public Library that they are prompt in replying on just about any topic under the Sun, Moon, Stars and Planets that traverse the universe.

Simply ask them for information on abandoned mines that was published in the Vindicator and they will send you a list, and provided you don't want copies of the articles, but just the dates there will  be no charge.

Example: Articles on local abandoned coal mines
Time Frame For Articles - Between 1940 to 1959 - Youngstown Vindicator

If you want the articles, they will be sent as attachments and  there is a fee of $1.00 per page.

Next time you want a picture or map at Googlenews click on print screen and copy it to Paint. From there save it to a folder and using whatever photo editor you use edit it.

I stumbled on a 1940 or so article in the Vindy Google archives that had a large illustration of all the coal
mines in the area, and listed names of the owners and locations on a pictorial map... DA**  I wish I had bookmarked it now...

:)

No mine maps but there were coal mines in the Fosterville area along with ruins of Indian homes. Col. Foster owned the mines.

Here's a 1983 Vindy article about a cave in up in Liberty on top of the old Church Hill mine.
It would be interesting to know what they did about it and what the site looks like now

I worked on the first version of this site when I was in my undergrad at YSU in Geology. It's been updated but it should contain information about the mines in Youngstown.

TownTalk.. do you have any old maps showing the locations of coal mines on the
Southside?

I think there were several under the lower end between Oakhill Ave (then called MILL Street)
and Glenwood..

Has anyone heard about an old mine shaft recently opening up on the south side of Youngstown?
