Westsider has it right.

The divider between Youngstown and Austintown Township (and Boardman Township and Canfield Township) is Meridian Road.

Canfield Road
is not the divider between Youngstown and Boardman Township nor the divider between Austintown Township and Canfield Township.

The boundry line for Youngstown and Boardman is just south of Sunnybrook and just north of Flora Lane.

For example, the Walgreens in Cornersburg is actually in Austintown Township.

But you have to pass through Boardman or Austintown to do it; if you want to be technical about it. ;)
Not if you are standing at the Meridian - Canfield Road Intersection you don't lol!

You can really only go SW into Canfield out of Cornersburg.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

This is only speculation on my part, but it seems Jay is saying that the sound is distant, and is coming--generally--from the SW.  Only Boardman, Canfield, and Austintown are in that direction, and anywhere still in the city would be too close.

The sound has been traced back to a backup power unit at a public school.

Some people claim to hear voices, some claim to hear motors, such is life.

Is there not a fourth political subdivision that makes up Cornersburg? If people can't tell if the noise is comming from one of the three mentioned, how could they rule out the other?

Many people in the Cornersburg area claim to hear the sounds of motors running day and night.  The sounds appear to be in the distance but they are not sure if it is coming from Boardman, Austintown or Canfield Township.
