Title: No Parks No Playgrounds
Post by: jay on February 12, 2010, 10:20:37 AM
To save money, it looks as though the City of Youngstown will not be operating its parks, pools, golf course and playgrounds this summer.

Is the availability of city summer recreational facilities important to you?

Don't believe every thing that you read. I just came from the P&R council committe meeting and there is nothing written in stone.

Well, why don't we give all the City park land to the CDA and MVOC for their new landbank and let them show HUD how they can make jobs and progress with all this land.

   Was that necessary!

John, it is necessary!  Right now you have both the CDA and the MVOC, both without track record in real estate , trying to ram down new legislation to create another landbank.  Obviously, this is another plan to justify pork for cushy jobs.  Fortunately for us mere mortals, HUD didn't give the money and Uncle Sam is now insolvent wherein no pork will be forthcoming.  Many of us local citizens have watched the local leadership for the past decades lead us down the road to a third world status, one merely has to look around to see our report card.  We are tired of all this fiefdom building and we want real leadership.

Also, I like to remind you of your past post of being serious about a general store downtown, I have never seen you at our store.  I really don't care if you come or not, but at least I've done it, albeit not in YTown.

It's really sad to think that the city built a brand new pool on the North Side, and
won't be operating it this summer... geez....

I don't know the whole story, but the Rescue Mission will be building on a old Park that has been closed for over 25 years.  The swimming pool was bulldozed over 20 years ago.

JRS, doesn't the rescue mission have five years to build or it becomes reversionary?

The South Side Park - was it the one at near the bottom of South Avene, which
used to have a large, round swimming pool?

I grew up about a block from South-side pool/park. It had a small round childrens pool and a larger rectangular one. 2 islands and 2 diving boards (or was it three). At any rate it was at the base of East Delason. And I was always under the impression that the park department actually had control of the woods that stretched all the way to Garfield School between Delason and Warren.

Also there was an Ice skating rink in the winter off to one side.

According to the most recent news reports,  the lack of city funds will definitely curtail the use of city parks and playgrounds this summer.

Question
Are there any groups in Youngstown that are working to raise money to keep some of these recreational facilities open?

It is my understanding the the R Mission will only use a small part of South Side Park  because of large waste water lines that run under the property. The project is moving more toward the Field  House.  They will maintain the Park grounds.

The parks and playgrounds will be open , there will not be organized activities there.  The challenge will be the cutting of the grass and other maintaince issues.  This is because there will only be a small full time staff.

the park and recreation dept was financially healthy before jay williams had more of the say on how this dept was to be operated due to the charter change.
