Why Not Ohio? Indiana Turbine Plant Could Bring 1,800 Jobs

NEW CASTLE, Ind. -- New Castle leaders are courting a wind turbine company that could bring as many as 1,800 jobs to the city.

Washington, D.C.-based Advantage Wind Turbine Project has secured equity and has commercial loan guarantees to open a plant in Henry County, but officials are still trying to get loan guarantees from the federal government, said New Castle Mayor Jim Small.

"I don't have the exact figures, but with the more favorable interest rates, they'll be able to hire more people, they'll be able to expand their programs, and that's significant," he told 6News' Renee Jameson.

Mike Darcy, CEO of D'Arcinoff Group, the company behind the proposal, told 6News by phone that the former Medaldyne factory in New Castle is one of the locations they're looking at.

Rep. Mike Pence said he's eager to see how the plan unfolds.

"Anytime we see an opportunity for further investment in east-central Indiana, we want to welcome that, but we also want to welcome that in a way that reflects the broader interest of taxpayers in the long term," he said.

Resident Ron Hale said the hope the deal materializes.

"It would be the biggest economic news that we have had literally in decades," he said. "This town is really hurting."

Darcy said a decision on financing will likely come in January. If it comes through, he said the company could begin hiring as early as February
