The Healthy Valley Alliance is urging everyone to have their homes tested for radon gas.  Free test kits are available for Mahoning County residents from the District Board of Health through a grant from the Ohio Department of Health and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that enters homes through cracks and holes in the foundation and can accumulate in indoor environments.. The U.S. Surgeon General recommends all homes be tested for radon, which is colorless, odorless and tasteless.  While exposure to elevated levels can increase one's risk for developing lung cancer, homeowners can reduce their exposure by testing their homes and taking appropriate action to reduce elevated levels.  Radon problems can be fixed, but the only way to know if elevated levels exist in your home is to test.

For more information about how to obtain a free test kit, contact Mary Helen Smith, R.S. at 330-270-2855 ext. 134 or visit the District Board of Health at 50 Westchester Drive in Austintown.
