If it hadn't come from a professional journal, namely: Journal of the Association of Engineering Societies – Vol. 2 – November 1882 – October, 1883, I would have found the story almost impossible to believe, yet in the article in question: Magnetic Geology: Or What I Know About The Divining Rod – By Charles Latimer, there is a letter from Mr. Andrews on pages 265-266 to the author testifying that Mr. Latimer and his divining rod did indeed help Mr. Andrews in his coal mining operation in the Fosterville area.
