Green Updates from the Apollo Alliance

In Los Angeles our colleagues at the Los Angeles Apollo Alliance merit a big shout out for their work to convince the Los Angeles City Council to approve a first-in-the-nation plan to create jobs, cut carbon emissions, and revitalize the inner city. The council voted to support a green retrofit of city buildings that will create hundreds of new jobs at a time when Angelenos are confronting 11 percent unemployment. The Los Angeles Apollo Alliance, a coalition of 25 local community, labor, and environmental organizations developed the Green Jobs Ordinance as part of the national organization's New Apollo Program. The national plan calls for investing $500 billion in clean energy solutions over the next ten years and create more than 5 million high quality green-collar jobs. The ordinance is the latest achievement of the New Apollo Program, which also played an influential role in shaping the development and enactment of the more than $100 billion in clean energy investment and green-collar job training contained in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which was signed by President Barack Obama in February.
Nationally, the Apollo Alliance is a partner in the upcoming "Earth Week in the Union Halls," a coast-to-coast event that takes place from April 18 to April 26. The idea is to galvanize support among unions and their members for clean energy development and generating green-collar jobs. A centerpiece of event is The Greening of Southie, an award-winning documentary of the development of energy efficient and environmentally sensitive housing in Boston, and the affect that project had on workers and the community
Our two fearless leaders also have been busy making the case for the clean energy economy and for good green-collar jobs around the country.
Apollo President Jerome Ringo was in Washington last week to meet with Al Gore and other leaders of the influential Green Group of national environmental organizations. Ringo also attended Newsweek Magazine's welcoming reception for the third annual Global Environmental Leadership Conference. Next week Ringo is in Madison, Wisconsin as a distinguished lecturer where he'll explore the economic and job growing implications of our New Apollo Program. His appearance is part of a series hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
Apollo Alliance Chairman Phil Angelides is preparing to be similarly busy. Later this month he's keynoting a conference hosted in San Francisco by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy. The following day Angelides keynotes the fourth Environmental Sustainability Conference at Merritt College. And on April 21, he joins President Bill Clinton and other prominent national leaders in giving remarks at Fortune Magazine's Brainstorm Green Conference.
