I read somewhere online that GM is talking about phasing out the Pontiac
nameplate altogether, just like they did with the Oldsmobile line, in order
to cut costs.

I totally understand the reasoning behind this, as "badge engineering"
(ie: the practice of making different branded versions of what is basically
the same automobile, with minor cosmetic differences) costs a lot of
money.

For all of the Pontiac models that have a Chevrolet, GMC or Buick equivalent,
folks could still buy the alternative version if Pontiac goes away, but it's
sad nevertheless to see the nameplate disappear.  As a teenager, I owned
a couple of Pontiac vehicles, and I loved them dearly.

Are we in for a world of hurt here in the Mahoning Valley if GM goes belly up? Already we are hearing that Lordstown will be down all of January, that a third shift will be dropped, and that there will be 890 offs as well as the number of cars that will be built.

Just how bad is it? My web site http://reporters.notebook.tripod.com details just where we stand concentrating on the auto industry since its so vital to our economy. Its not pretty.
