Allan,  are you still buying into the farce that increased CO2 levels are a bad thing?  I would have thought that most intelligent people would have done some independent research by now and discovered the truth. (irishbobcat excluded of course.  Its a religious conviction for him)

Also, what is so bad about the planet warming?  Its a better alternative than the planet cooling down.  While the mainstream worries and frets about the perceived downside of warming, nobody talks about the benefits. There are benefits from having more CO2 as well, but that is ignored too.

Toymakers own words:
"And don't forget, we (the U.S.) also generate 20+% of the world's total greenhouse gases (with a 5% population).

True, the planet is over populated. Why does the media, medical science, and narcissistic yuppies continue to promote an average lifespan of 100 years of age? They even recently reported an age of 200?? Self absorbed people can't deal with mortality. When the news reports such "100 year old" stories, they act like it's progress! For some dumb reason, the reporters never pause and ask "where will all these people live?" "Progress" usually has negative side effects, even it takes 100 years to notice...like autos."

Toymaker: Are you suggesting that governments should set maximum limits as to how long people can live like other countries set limits as to how many children a couple can have? What are you suggesting ... reach age XX (name your number) then it's off to the glue factory with you or better still the gas chambers an crematoriums? Obviously you're not old enough to remember when they had these very institutions up and running in Europe.

By the way, there are Environmentalist groups that advocate such measures to decrease the "excess population".

The fact that all of the cheaper, easier to get-at oil deposits in the earth have
pretty much been tapped in our times means that gas prices will continue to
go up rapidly - and not come down again unless the entire world community
can reduce its demand for oil.

The United States has about 300 million people, granted, but CHINA has
approximately 3 BILLION people.  The Chinese government actively restricts
the number of children allowed per couple to just one, with the occasional
(and very rare) exception.

China's demands for energy are growing more rapidly than those of the
United States - especially with globalization and increased commerce
between China and the rest of the world.

With the out-sourcing of so many of our skilled (and high-paying) technical
jobs to India, a whole new middle-class is emerging for them - bringing with
it a huge increase in the demand for oil there.

Greehouse gases are produce by many different sources, not just gasoline
and diesel fuel.  Burning coal, wood and many other fuels also contributes
to the greenhouse effect and the environmental changes that will inevitably
come of something is not done to stem the tide.  In addition, the cutting down
of the vast rain forests in South America, etc is exacerbating the problem.
Trees and forests are LITERALLY the lungs of the planet - they breathe in our
carbon dioxide and return oxygen to the atmosphere.

I guess you could say that in our day and age, the world's "lungs" have come
down with "emphysema" - they can no longer adequately filter the amount of
carbon dioxide being produced by developed and developing countries to
keep up with things.

Peak Oil!  You have no idea.  How about Peak Everything!

I wonder how many of the people who are complaining about dwindling resources have children? The earth can no longer support 6.7 billion people so why are they adding to the problem by having children?

That is the real root of the problem, too many people to support. If we only have 5% of the total world population in the US but use up 25% of the resources, so does that mean that having one baby in the US is the equivalent of five in the rest of the world, with regard to resource usage.

Actually we need capitalists now more than ever to discover new ways to fuel our economy and our lifestyles.

Almost correct. We need entrepreneurial spirit and entrepreneurs, who have always been the ones to blaze new trails and innovate. While most all entrepreneurs are capitalists, few capitalists are entrepreneurs. Modern day "capitalists" have done more to screw up society in the U.S.

OldMill, even without the Fed printing money out of thin air the cost of oil will continue to rise since demand is greater than supply.

Rick, I understand China, India and some others are emerging from the dark ages contributing to oil problems but add that to  the couple trillion that was printed out of thin air with nothing to back it . I guess we can throw a bit of greed in the pot also.

Rick:

If we are past the point of "peak everything"....does that mean America will want a return to progressive liberal values like during the Great Depression?

Dennis Spisak

And no word from Spain yet.....maybe they are shipping the solar and wind panels as we speak....lol

Oldmill

The main reason oil is so high is simply this -  the bush administration prompted the fed to print more than 2 trillion dollars with nothing there to back it up. Other contries knowing the American dollar is worthless want more dollars for their goods.  The fed used to print the M3 report until last year, First of all it's important to understand that the M3 report is the broadest measure of the supply of money in the economy. By ceasing to report the supply of money , that put up a red flag to the people that understand money and economies.  Most Americans do not understand what is really happening here  .   Search, read and truely understand what is happening in this country . It is scary .

A disclaimer, I have no children.

Watch this series of videos entitled "Peak Everything". Its an eye opener.

We have seen the Peak of our civilization. Like it or not, its going to change.

T. Boone Pickens was on Glenn Beck last night. He says that the world production of oil is 85 billion barrels per year. World oil demand is 87.4 billion barrels. Demand is greater than supply so prices naturally will rise.

He also says that we are losing 6 billion barrels production per year. We already reached Peak Oil in 2007 and any new discoveries will have to make up for the 6 billion loss before any new capacity is added.

Yet we add people at the rate of a billion per decade and oil demand continues to rise.

This is a real problem people. Its not make believe like Global Warming, which BTW will no longer be an issue if there are no hydrocarbons left to make CO2.

While driving home this afternoon, I heard on the radio news that oil closed at over $133 today.
