First, there were only two courtrooms in the old Post Office, the Federal District Court and the Bankruptcy Court.

When the city bought the building, the Judges said no to the idea.

One reason why they said no aside from the fact that there were not enough Court Rooms was the fact that it would pose a security problem in that the only Jail cells were a couple of holding cells in the old U.S. Marshal's Office.

Certainly there is enough office space on the Third floor, but a number of those spaces are occupied by other departments.

The space used by the District Court takes up a lot of the space, but would be hard to convert to additional Court Rooms since it would require knocking down walls in the rooms on the Market Street side of the building, and even then they couldn't provide enough Courtrooms to meet the needs.

As to the old Marshal's office, the last time I was in the building, it was occupied.

The offices that went along with the District Court were along the Market Street side of the building, and designed for single occupant use, (Court Administrator, Attorneys, conference room etc.) The Clerk Of Court's space is itself too small to handle the amount of traffic it would get as a space for a Municipal Clerk of Court's office.

How many Muney Judges are there?

Certainly the Judges are right about needing a new Municipal Court, but the simple fact is that we also need a new Police Station, and don't have the money for either.

As to the Bankruptcy Court Room and it's office space, it was not as large as the space for the District Court, and was located on the West Side of the building on the Third Floor.

Finally, the old District Court room itself would need restoration in order to bring it back into use.

Youngstown's municipal judges want new courtrooms.

Aren't the old federal courtrooms on the third floor of the former post office building (now the city hall annex) still available?
