As a former employee of [AOL] Time-Warner, I can empathize with folks in Youngstown
regarding the escalating cable pricing.  Down here in Maryland, my basic Comcast(R)
service runs me about $45.00 a month.

I just had to drop HBO and some other premium channels, because my bill had gotten
out of hand - it was approaching $100.00 a month, and I wasn't watching the premium
channels enough to justify keeping them.

Towntalk,  here are links to a couple Internet sites that are now offering HDTV/DIGITAL
add on cards, and external (USB) devices that will allow your PC to receive and view
HDTV [digital] television signals.  Many of the TV tuner cards also have an FM radio
receiver built into them.

One of the really NICE things about computers and peripherals is that with each passing
month, they are getting BETTER - while getting CHEAPER at the same time.  By the time
analog TV broadcasts cease to operate in February, 2009 there should be plenty of
offerings in this arena - at VERY reasonable [ie cheap ! ] prices.

They already make TV tuner cards that will allow you to connect your current "cable
ready" TV set to an output on the back of the computer, with a standard piece of
of coaxial cable (ie the type of cable that you are already using to hook up your
TV set if you have cable TV).

I just have the Time Warner Lifeline - the bare minimum and my new bill went from 14.44 to 15.14. There are just a limited number of channels that I watch and saw no sense in spending more just to get channels I will never watch. As long as I can get CNN and C-SPAN I'm happy. IF it goes up beyond a level I set, I'll have the cable taken out since 95% of my time is spent with my computer as opposed to TV watching.

By the way, as I understand it, when Congress passed the legislation for digital TV they put in a provision that gives us a discount toward the purchase of a converter. Just how much the bottom line would be I don't know, but with the box, you can still use your analog TV.

Hopefully the cost of digital TV's will drop low enough that I would be able to afford one, but I'm not going to go into debt just to get one right now. When the time comes that I can get a reasonable digital TV for $150 to $250 then I'll think about it.

Also, there are TV stations that can be viewed on my computer FOR FREE and while viewing TV on a computer is not the same as a regular TV, it's better than nothing.

By the way, my website has links to both radio and TV stations that can be viewed or listened to on your computer. In total, there are more stations there than any cable service offers.

There's another Time Warner Cable increase coming with our next statement.  The last increase was January 2007.

We've lost several channels (moved to Digital lineup) that haven't been replaced by anything else.
Does anyone on the Forum still have the original Standard service and not the Digital?
It seems like Time Warner is putting the pressure on for us to go to Digital.
