I read an article about the proprietor of Phantom....seems they employ about 400 American
People, full time.  No surprise about Chinese fireworks.....they practically invented them.

90% of the fireworks are made in china.

The Northside was awash with cannon and brimstone.  As always I slept  like a baby.  Once you get use to the hail of gunfire and chaos here, the 4th is just pinnacle of it all.

Irishbobcat

Fireworks in my neighborhood lasted well past midnight......idiots....

jay

Someone in my neighborhood started launching aerial fireworks around 9:00 p.m.  This went on for more than one hour.  The smell of burnt gunpowder filled my residence.

:'(

Things were very quiet where I live.  ;D No booms - no bangs - no pops - nadda  :D  Just glorious quiet.  :)

Irishbobcat

Nothing like the smell of sulphur in the air with haze last night, my neighborhood sounding like a war zone, and litter all over the streets today....thank you Phantom Fireworks....now go enjoy the next ten months off......

Towntalk - completely calm here already, trust me.....I was only making the counter argument
to promote the same discussion.....

:)

I hate neighborhood fireworks as well. My dog will shake for hours today and tonight. Leave the fireworks for professional shows only.

Calm down Allan, the truth beknown Jay loves fireworks just as much as you do. He just takes that postion to generate thoughtful conversation. I'll bet that he was downtown watchng Youngstown's fireworks last night.

Asthmatic reactions are more likely to be triggered by:

Cigarette smoke
Dust mites
Cold air or changes in humidity
Pollution due to ozone, car exhaust, etc.
Stress
Pollen
General allergies
Certain foods
Pets/animals

Fireworks are set off outside, where there is plenty of fresh air around to dissipate
the smoke ie: not the same as being inside a smoke filled room.  One would think
that knowing they have asthma, people with this affliction would have the common
sense to not put themselves in close proximity to outdoor fireworks smoke.

Once again, it's not fair to expect the general population to forego a traditional
OUTDOOR celebration for a small subset of the population who have the ability to
easily avoid the area for a little while.

With regard to grass and fires, the odds are much greater that they would be started
by camp fires, burning cigarettes, barbecue grills, gas powered lanterns, patio torches,
etc ie: activities that take place more than once a year - in fact every day during warm
weather months and all year long for those who smoke cigarettes (or anything else, for
that matter....LOL ).

Public fireworks displays almost always have fire and safety personnel on site during
the show.  Private individuals simply need to excercise the same due diligence
they would for any other combustible substance.  Just ask Smokey The Bear.

Case in point: an estimated eight to ten thousand people enjoyed a fireworks
show in Austintown yesterday, apparently with no issues, either this year OR
the past two years.  I'll make a wild guess that persons with major Asthma
problems most likely opted to not attend the fireworks show, or simply exercised
common sense and maintained their distance from the smoke......

There were two news stories on the TV this evening.

Smoke from fireworks aggravates the health problems of people with asthma.

In dry regions of the county, it could cause grass/forest fires.

For the sake of our mentally stressed veterans:

Please do not go where fireworks or other explosions are present if you know
you have a problem with either flashbacks or shell shock, or generally just do
not care for fireworks or things that go "boom", "crack", or "pop".

This would include firing ranges, construction sites, rail yards, warehouses,
factories, ship yards, races where a starter's pistol is used,  and any other places
where these types of noises might occur.

PLEASE NOTE:  I am NOT in any way making light of those veterans  who have
mental or emotional problems as a result of having served their country. What
I AM making light of, is the expectation that NO ONE should set off fireworks
on account of those few who have these disabilities.

Surely, there are places where people can enjoy celebrating one of our biggest
national holidays in a traditional way that has existed for over two centuries,
in relative safety.

Surely those with shell shock, flashbacks, etc. should be trusted to use the
comon sense that GOD blessed them with and NOT go there if it is going to
be a problem for them - and to decide for themselves if this is going to be
the case.

Absent any local laws or ordinances forbidding the setting off of fireworks,
citizens have every right to do so, within reason and as defined by said
laws and ordinances.  If this means that folks may be setting them off in their
neighborhoods, bear in mind that this comes around only one day a year.

Fireworks are completely banned where I live, and I know of several veterans
who are very unhappy about this, as they relish this national tradition and
celebration of the birth of our nation.

I saw this on TV yesterday.

Fireworks can cause combat veterans to have flashbacks to their war experiences.  For the sake of our mentally stressed veterans, don't shoot off fireworks.

Three cheers for Peggy ... thank you my frend.
