this position should be a civil service job with a written test and oral interview given at the time of submitting this application to the city human resource dept with a portfolio as part of the vetting process. the mayor is doing a decent job as a good public servant but the mayor can play politics, too with this position. a civil service job comes with employment protections from zealous and vengeful   reps or mayors.

It is refreshing for me, as a "Citizen Emeritus" of Youngstown to see a Mayor who is NOT
afraid to bump heads with City Council - and does the legal legwork when disputes
over power and authority arise.

His Honor the Mayor has BOTH the brains AND the guts to stand up to the "village
idiots".

Truly commendable.

So glad to hear that the Mayor is moving on this and the position will be in one office reporting to one person. Best of luck to the hire!!! It was truly a great job.

The job requires a bachelor's degree but in no particular field?  You know YSU does have a hospitality management program.

Why would council, six of the seven members of which do not even represent the area in which the events coordinator would work, want to have control over this position? Council's job is to represent the individual areas of the city and to make broad policy decisions.  The Mayor is in the executive branch and it is his job to carry out council's wishes.  Works the same way as the US govt.  There are no heads of departments that report to congress!

They wouldn't want me given the type of music I love ... can't stand a lot of the stuff-'n-nonsense that passes for music today.
By the way the def. for stuff-'n-nonsense is defined as: an expression used to show that you think something is not true and/or is silly

Peggy Gurney

It really is. I hope they're paying well.

I'd love to do this, but alas, I am WAY underqualified.

What a very extensive job description.

It's too bad all the super heroes are busy.

and tarpley once said this council is the most educated on since jy lded by boat on the shores of the mah river. tarpley wanted to rep our area down in columbus. the state reps laugh at us know, can you imagine what they would do to us if tarpley won in May.

Towntalk

Well hopefully that is a step in the right direction and we can all see a bright new future for downtown events. It would be great to have a return of the weekly Friday night parties on the plaza, and hopefully the new director will join us here and post events on a regular basis. I know that when I was working downtown we always looked forward to the Friday night events.

PD

No. Because it passed last night it is now under the Mayor and he may move forward with the hiring process

PD

Tarpley screwed it up and put it up for vote with everything else.  It passed
Council tried to go back and put it back up to be in the finance committee and that motion was denied
