Republicans dominated county politics up to about 1936 when Mike Kerwan won his first term as Congressman.

Some say Youngstown is now moving into the era of the independents.

Three independents are running for Mayor of Youngstown.
One independent is running for President of Council.

Many of us bemoan the fact that the Democrats rule Mahoning County, while the Republicans are all but non-existent on the ballot. Back in the day, the role was reversed, and Mahoning County was staunchly Republican.

In Mahoning County not one Democrat won in the 1906 November election.
