Ricky, I always tried to think you were an educated man, but all of your comments since you started this post have made me start to wonder.

Why does it take an executive order? Because it's an ELECTION YEAR, Ricky.  This action is certainly aimed at energizing Obama's Democratic base.

It's all about politics and elections, Ricky. This order is to help Obama underscore his commitment to educational reform...and offered what is likely to be seen as a rebuke to those who have criticized his administration for failing to advance any White House agenda specific to the needs of African Americans.

The president's pending executive order carving out a new role for the Education Department counters the approach of his challenger, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who said in April that "[t]he Department of Education I will either consolidate with another agency or perhaps make it a heck of a lot smaller." Many on the right have opposed the agency, established under President Carter, almost from its inception in 1980.

It;s all about politics, Ricky. This is a pitch to the African-American voters who were the bedrock of support for Obama in the 2008 election. If so, not without good reason: Black college students and educators were a big part of the ground game -- from working caucuses to operating phone banks to canvassing neighborhoods -- that helped Obama secure the presidency in 2008.

And oh, by the way, a similar program, for Hispanic students, was created in 1990 with an executive order signed by President George H.W. Bush. His three successors -- including Obama -- have signed orders to extend the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans. Does this also make Bush Senior, Clinton, and Dubya Bush racists as well?

Local school districts are already implementing such programs and stategies. We can and do figure this stuff out. What does Obama know about education that we do not know? Not much. But he does know how politics works, and how to win votes with his base.

I don't agree with adding another extra department or layer to the Department of Education either, but his "order" does not make him a racist.
My question to you would be if Romney gets elected and dissolves the Department of Education which in turn may stop programs designed
to help African-Americans achieve more, does that make him a racist as well?

Ricky, please stop and think, read, research, and analyze topics before you make future comments that make yourself look uninformed.

My statement was as far over the line as many you have made over the years.

So Dennis, why does it take an executive order to start identifying and implementing these new and innovative techniques? Can't your school district figure this stuff out and implement what works best in the Struthers schools?  What does Obama know about public education that you, the rest of the board and the teachers don't already know?

iwasthere

sarge i agree with you. my other pet peeve is when the media refers to the pres as the first black pres which is TOTALLY wrong. pres obama is the first bi-racial pres.

The problem I have with that is the word African............

What would the country be like if we were all just Americans?

Ricky, Ricky, Ricky,.....

If you don't make this stuff up...then you simply cut and paste right-winged interpretations of Obama's orders.

If you go to the White House web site...you can read the entire "official" statement and proposal. The whole statement regarding the
"discipline" point you are trying too prove reads as follows:
(vi) reducing the dropout rate of African American students and helping African American students graduate from high school prepared for college and a career, in part by promoting a positive school climate that does not rely on methods that result in disparate use of disciplinary tools, and by supporting successful and innovative dropout prevention and recovery strategies that better engage African American youths in their learning, help them catch up academically, and provide those who have left the educational system with pathways to reentry;

Ricky, the just of his proposal is that a positive school climate "DOES NOT RELY ON" simply the use of use of detentions, suspensions, etc, but supporting successful and innovative dropout prevention and recovery strategies that better engage African American youths in their learning, help them catch up academically, and provide those who have left the educational system with pathways to reentry.

Any educator knows that to have a positive school climate you must have other interventions in place besides discipline policies.

It's just like the old saying...."The beatings will stop once morale improves."This approach alone does not work.

The true text at the heart of the matter is not controversial, and not a campaign to regulate disciplinary actions so racial groups are penalized at equal rates, regardless of indivisuals' behavior.

To call Obama the Racist in Chief is truely a low blow. I am really disappointed in you, Ricky. That statement is well over the line.

Please read the entire offical bill, order, or decree next time before posting some bigoted right wing propaganda. Seems to me that ultra conservative right wingers always try to pass themselves off as being highly educated. I now have my doubts.

I've about given up, this administration is a joke. What's this I've heard he is suing the state of Ohio because of extended voting for Military members?

President Barack Obama is backing a controversial campaign by progressives to regulate schools' disciplinary actions so that members of major racial and ethnic groups are penalized at equal rates, regardless of individuals' behavior.

I can't make this stuff up!   I can't wait to wake up each morning to find the next absolutely preposterous thing that he is going to try.  Why is it that liberals ALWAYS only look at a person's skin color or sex or sexual preference, but never look at INDIVIDUALS?
