I had heard about a walking park and a senior center. When did it become senior citizen apartments?

Rick,

The people I am thinking of are those who have done well enough for themselves
during their working years to remain financially independent in their retirement
years, but are looking for a place to retire where their savings, pension and/or
other benefits will stretch farther from month to month - thereby allowing them
to enjoy a higher standard of living in retirement than they would elsewhere.

The retirees I'm thinking of here, would be people from other urban/suburban
areas - where the enconomy, pay & benefits scale is considerably higher.
These are people who don't need a good paying job to live in Youngstown,
they already had one and are now living off their retirement incomes/assetts.

This would be a big win for the city, because these folks would be paying
income and/or property taxes, patronizing local businesses, etc. even though
they are not working any more.

There would be economic opportunities generated for busninesses that cater
to older people, such as home healthcare, maintenance and repair, public and
private transportation, etc.

Lots of seniors have a lifetime of experience in their field that could be a
valuable asset to the comminity if they could be persuaded to donate some of
their time and career experience to mentor young people in the area and increase
their knowledge and skills as they reach maturity and go out into the labor market.

My former boss at AOL told me just last month that his neighbor had retired
and that he had sold his home, and was getting ready to move  to....

Youngstown!

This gentleman had worked in the DC Metro area as an I.T. professional for
more than 30 years, and made very, very good money.

Case in point...

Lets amend that to say retirees who have their own retirement savings.  We are not interested in more people who are only living on Social Security and Medicare.

I think Youngstown needs to more aggresively promote itself as
a retirement community.  With it's abundance of cheap housing stock
and its low cost of living, it could be very attractive to retiring, succesful
career-professionals who are looking for an affordable place to live in
their retirement years.

Fourth Ward Councilwoman Carol Rigetti has proposed the construction of a senior citizen apartment building on the site of the former West Elementary School.  She will hold meetings regarding this project in the coming weeks.
