I also noticed that the phone book does not list every business under the "hall" listing.  Check the "caterers" list for additional halls.

ForumManager

I thought he might be hinting at certain establishments.
Actually I have looked in the phone book and noticed that are FEW banquet halls within the city limits that are not associated with churches or are not an extra room in a restaurant. The Yellow pages are pretty bad in the last few years... another topic.

PLEASE - give Jay a break - Go to the "Yellow Pages" for that information - it will be more accurate.  We just got the book a month or so ago and you KNOW Jay is pretty old (he is retired ya know - and he looks younger every day since AND forgets more than ever  ;))
The POINT still stands - I hold elected officials to a much higher standard - The city of Youngstown needs ALL the business it can get !!!  Remember this:  2 and 1/2 percent of the wages of each person working in Youngstown goes to Youngstown.  I will let the "Yellow Pages" back me up as to Youngstown's Banquet Facilities.

I sure agree Golden Dawn is a great place ! ! !

GOD BLESS ANNIE HALL

I've always liked the Golden Dawn... great folks, down to earth food, good prices, retro atmosphere.

But that aside.

Jay can you list some banquet halls within the city limits and their price range?
I know one of them that is very expensive.

I realize several restaurants have side rooms, but are they large enough for a big party? What churches offer catering?

Elmo-Ytown

I ate at the Golden Dawn the other day, I give them the double thumbs up for friendliness. I didn't realize they were cash only, and wanted to leave them one of my car keys as colateral while I went to an ATM. They just told me to "sign your name to the bill, and even up next time you stop in".

For 2008, I thought that was amazing, seems like most places would have called the police had I not had the money for my bill.

I had the opportunity to dine at two small Youngstown restaurants in the past week.  One was on the west side and the other on the south side.  Business was so bad that both restaurants did not have a waitress on duty the day of my visit.  The cook came out of the kitchen and also waited on the tables.

I feel the councilmen, at the very least, should be in the forefront of bringing economic activity to the city of Youngstown.

Rick Rowlands

Some of you talk about regionalization as being a good thing, but should you throw a party outside of your city then you are the lowest form of trash...

Maybe this banquet hall was the only one that had an open slot for the party?  Maybe they were cheaper?  Maybe they had better selection of food?  There are many considerations that go into selecting a banquet hall which we don't know.  Maybe the Hubbard banquet hall is owned by a crony of the councilperson.

Dear Mr. Rick Rowlands - I am sorry you feel that I "bad mouthed" Hubbard at the "slightest prompting".  I happen to like Hubbard - it is a fine community of good people here in our Mahoning Vally.  The establishment in question I know to be of excellent reputation in all aspects of food service.  The point of the post was not to "bad mouth" Hubbard or any of it's businesses.

Dear Towntalk - I can not agree with you more when it comes to "public funds" and "private funds".  I also will concede when it comes to "employees" and "unions" doing what they want with their monies.  I am quite sure there are a few GM employees that drive other makes of cars.  I am sure some Postal Employees use UPS or FEDEX.  I don't think it is the correct way to go - but hay that is just lill ole me and my one opinion.  The point I was making is that I guess I hold ELECTED OFFICIALS to a higher standard.  I EXPECT them to be obliged - even in personal matters - to seek and encourage efforts which benefit their constituents.  This case you and I both know there are places in their own ward let alone Youngstown in general that you can get at the very least an equivalent banquet center.  They are ELECTED LEADERS and should be held to a higher standards.  I think their business should be to get as much business for Youngstown as they can.  Do you agree ?

Elmo-Ytown

No ones badmouthing Hubbard (even though it is just an overgrown truck stop) ( just kidding!!! )

The point is, they should have held the event in Youngstown. If someone is holding a retirement party for a city official of Hubbard, who has done a lot for that city, they wouldn't come to Youngstown to do it...

Rick Rowlands

I live in Hubbard.  I always considered my hometown a part of the Mahoning Valley.  I see that some of you would rather badmouth a neighboring community at the slightest prompting.

Towntalk

A question: Do we know that the event was paid for out of city funds? If it was, I'd agree with you Jay, but if it was paid for out of private funds, then that is quite a different matter.

If I worked for the city and co-workers threw me a retirement party out of their own and union funds would I be obligated to have the event at a city hall just because I worked for the city?

Certainly I'd expect my co-workers to shop around for the best bang for their buck.

This councilperson is all talk.  She had an opportunity to bring some economic activity to the city of Youngstown but did not.  I'm sure the city of Hubbard received a nice chunk of change from the income taxes paid by the hall and its employees.

In my li'l ol opinion - and everyone and their brother has at least one li'l ol opinion  -  so it's not worth much  :-X  Maybe your caption should read:
Re: Good News, Bad News Bad News Bad News
I was surprised to get a notice in the mail about this event and thought about going to it until I found out it was in Hubbard.  The former Youngstown City Councilman and his wife, a present Youngstown City Councilwoman, seem to be some of the organizers of the event.  I think it is very sad that someone who did so much for Youngstown has to be honored by Youngstowners in another city in another county.  I am very sorry to see that there isn't a PLACE in Youngstown let alone the Youngstown Ward where they live that is BETTER than any place in Hubbard.  The only good I can say is perhaps this couple are staunch believers in Rationalization - God Bless Them !
GOD BLESS ANNIE HALL ! ! !  :-*

Good News
A former Youngstown city councilman announced on the radio this morning that a banquet would be held to honor Annie Hall, a long time Youngstown citizen activist.

Bad News
The banquet will be held at a dining facility in Hubbard, Ohio.
