The mores of the Victorian era trap a strong and gifted woman in a loveless marriage, with no opportunity of any greater achievement than to bring children into the world. Horrified at this prospect and stifled by the respectability that provides her with her only security, she seeks fulfillment in manipulating the lives of others and diverts herself by fencing with a dangerous predator.
