Local Political Candidates

Good Point, but how do we get the public more involved? Most of the candidates are working on a shoestring budget and can't throw the kind of bashes that would draw people ... under law they can't campaign in the local churches during sunday morning services ... so what is left other than radio and television?

One idea that just might work is to have all the candidates do local debates in the WKBN Radio auditorium with Dan Rivers moderating.

During the last Mayoral race this was done and the auditorium was full. The program was aired also. The hitch to this idea is that Mr. Rivers would have to know that there is a demand for such a debate. All of you would have to let him know that you want these debates by contacting him via letters ... the more letters he gets the better.

The letter should contain your name and address including the Zip Code so that he will know that you actually live in Youngstown.

The debate should help ... it helped Mayor Williams.

You should start the letter drive ASAP so that the candidates con be firmly scheduled .

Also, if it is possable, the debate should be held in the evening on a Friday - Saturday - or Sunday say from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a lot of advance publicity.

And as an incentive some of the restaurants should be called on to whip up some grub as a handout for the audience FREE. More will come if they know that there's something in it for them.

People in our area just won't attend candidates' forums.  Unfortunately, most voters rely on TV commercials and other media ads for their information.  This public apathy is killing Youngstown.  In the recent Youngstown city council races, the better candidate did not always win the election.
