This sounds like a fascinating exhibit!  My father was the weather man for WFMJ for
many years - he retired about 20 years ago.  As a child, I used to go to work with
him and "hang out" in the newsroom sometimes.

Once in a while, he would even get permission for me to sit behind the cameras
during the 6 O'Clock news broadcast, or hang out with the DJ's in the DJ booth
for the radio station.

On Air: 80 Years of Commercial Broadcasting in the Mahoning Valley will invite museum guests to discover the unique attributes of our Valley's broadcast history as well as the connection of our community to the national history of radio and television broadcasting.  The exhibit will examine radio and television in separate galleries, and the local and global influences of both formats.  The radio gallery will look back on early transmitting and government licensing, and the influences that sparked Warren P. Williamson, Jr.'s interest in radio leading up to his first broadcast in 1926.  From these roots the exhibit will chronicle the entrance of other radio stations in the Mahoning Valley market, and how events and advances from outside the community influenced the growth and change of the industry.

The gallery devoted to television will look at the great race between rivals WKBN and WFMJ to bring this "new" form of broadcasting to the Valley in 1953.  The gallery will discuss the challenges and triumphs faced by local broadcasters, and will examine newer methods of sending programs to Valley viewers and listeners, such as cable, digital and satellite radio and television.

We hope that you will join us as we look back on these transmissions from the past and reminisce about the people, places, and events recorded for posterity in these transmissions.  What a legacy to reflect on!
