Might Reach 100 Degrees Today

I stopped at the North Side Farmers' Market today and noticed that there weren't as many people as other Saturdays.  One farmer stated that he felt today's attendance was about half of what it was last week.  I guess with the high temperatures, most people just remained at home or went to places with air conditioning.

Crops are difficult to raise in hot weather.  If people don't come out to buy the produce, the farmers lose the money that they have invested in what they brought to market.

There is an excessive heat warning out for Youngstown which will expire at 9:00 pm tonight.

morning to 9 PM EDT this evening...

* Impacts... heat index values between 105 and 110 this afternoon
and evening will impact outdoor activities and indoor
facilities that do not have air conditioning... especially for
sensitive groups.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of
dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot
temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous
situation in which heat-related illnesses are likely. Drink
plenty of fluids... stay in an air-conditioned room... stay out of
the sun... and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible... reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency-call 911.

There is a 70% chance of a strong thunderstorm this afternoon.

According to AccuWeather the hottest time of day today will be at 3:00 pm when it will be 95 degrees with a heat index of 101 degrees.

That's the heat index (feels like temp) and it could go as high as 102 degrees. The elderly should not go out today, and drink plenty of ice water (stay away from iced tea or coffee as they aggravate the body temperature.

The temperature should start to cool down about 9:30 pm.

Last night the TV weather forecaster stated that it might hit 100 degrees today.

I don't know if the city of Youngstown has any official cooling stations, but I would recommend getting on a WRTA bus and spending the hottest portion of the day at one of our air conditioned public libraries.
