I just read in the vindicator http://www.vindy.com/content/local_regional/289570025569902.php that City Council voted down the community redevelopment designation for that area yesterday.  Thats a win for property owners but I am sure that its not over yet.

I don't care what benefits the new development will bring, its not worth what those private property owners will lose if they don't want to sell.   Its simple, go around them! Its all in the planning stages now and there is plenty of land to build around those properties.

I've been emailing news about this to the Castle Coalition. http://www.castlecoalition.org We may need their help if this turns ugly.

It's a good point you're making - I hope that a compromise can be worked out
that will work to benefit both sides of this issue.  Home owners and businesses
in the proposed development area need and deserve to be "made whole"
again if they are displaced by the new development - and city and university
would benefit from another expansion of the YSU campus.  I believe that
downtown businesses would see an increase in patronage by having the
[then larger]  university directly adjacent to them.

People who rent homes or apartments in the proposed development would be displaced, but there is no shortage of rental housing in Youngstown.

Just saw on the local news that the Yo City Board of Control already gave their okay for plans to "revitalize" the lower North side up to YSU, removing empty and occupied buildings.   Plans are to be voted on by Council in June, making it final.  The owners of occcupied businesses asked that alternative measures be taken.  They are viable businesses with 150 and more workers that will either be displaced or unemployed.

What is the plan to make Youngstown a place where people will want to live and work if there isn't employment opportunities and housing?
