YOU ARE INVITED...

Wick Neighbors, Inc.
Presents Richard C. Harwood

Youngstown: No Longer a Place in Waiting

Speaker: Richard C. Harwood, a noted national expert on strengthening communities and improving public life, is the founder and president of The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation, a nonprofit organization in Bethesda, Maryland. Harwood's recent book, Hope Unraveled: The Peoples Retreat and Our Way Back, looks at a nation in retreat from politics and public life and alternate pathways for people to return to public life.

In 1999, The Harwood Institute prepared the Report: Waiting for the Future: Creating New Possibilities for Youngstown. This study concluded that Youngstowners felt "stuck and that the city was a 'place in waiting.'" WNI has invited Harwood back to assess Youngstown's new momentum and positive civic gains. He also will discuss providing new direction for public innovation, shaping public leaders to drive such innovations and building supporting civic-minded organizations to sustain and grow strong community life.

Wick Neighbors, Inc (WNI): Incorporated in September of 2004, WNI is a nonprofit development corporation spearheading development of the Wick District in Youngstown, Ohio, with the Smoky Hollow Development as the keystone project. WNI's mission is bringing the community together to build a neighborhood for creative living, working and learning in the heart of the Mahoning Valley. Goals include: building a mixed-use, regionally competitive neighborhood; attracting workers and residents back to the city; creating a shared sense of place in collaboration with institutional and business stakeholders; and serving as a catalyst for Youngstown 2010. WNI is governed by a 40-member Board of Directors representing: Smoky Hollow residents, leadership from religious, educational and cultural institutions, finance, real estate, government, and civic organizations.
