Jay, it was the quality of the picture ... pictures out of newspapers are not famous for their quality, especially back in 1947.

The old method. The photographer takes the picture, then it's sent to Arc Engraving to be made into a plate. It next goes to the Composing Room where it is placed where it will go on the page. When the page is complete it's sent to the Stereotype departmant where it is first made into a mat then taken to the casting machine where its made into a plate that will go onto the press. Through all these steps the quality of the original photo is downgraded.

Todays method of printing a newspaper is far better since the photograph doesn't go through as many steps. The page is made up, then photographed onto a photo sensitive plate which goes to the press.
