The Mahoning River

Actually the Ohio EPA has posted guidelines for eating fish from the Mahoning. Many fish are safe to eat. At least in moderation.

And it is some of the best sport fishing around. but don't tell everyone, It's a secret.........

Obviously George is not from this area and has no first hand knowledge of the river, or what fish there are in it.

Petroleum hydrocarbons, benzo(a)pyrene (polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons), and mercury have all been found in quantities several times the maximum safe levels. Since 1988, the Ohio Department of Health has maintained an advisory against swimming or wading in the river between Leavittsburg and the Pennsylvania border and advises against eating fish caught there. The Corps of Engineers estimates that the remediation will take up to 15 years to complete and cost in excess of $100 million.

The Mahoning River is a river located in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. It joins the Shenango River to form the Beaver River and is part of the Ohio River watershed.

The river supports over 72 species of fish and 15 species of freshwater mussels. Fried Mahoning River catfish is very popular in the region.
