It is appalling that we even do not produce enough food to feed ourselves, despite the largest industry in Ohio being agriculture.  One would have to do a crash course in history to find why we have evolved this way.  Interesting though is that the Ohio Farm bureau is one of the strongest and oldest grassroots organizations around which ensures limiting the government in interference of farming.  What I find comforting is the law of "agricultural exemption" wherein a farm in a county and township do not require any zoning and building permits.  This very same law has allowed the American farmer to be the most advanced agriculturist in the world.  The downside in urban agriculture is in the municipalities, the history was that rather than agriculture,   industry, residential and commercial zoning was the interest and many times agriculture usage was not even mentioned in created zoning ordnances.  The problem then was urban sprawl encroaching into agricultural land.  Unlike majority of municipalities fortunately, "crop farming" is specifically permitted in Youngstown zoning.

This is a very great initiative and more people will tend to learn about the difference between organic and in-organic foods, what are the different kinds of farmer's foods and their specifications for sure.

Building a Regional Food System
with Dr. James Converse

Only 1 % of the $35 billion that Ohio consumers annually spend on food is spent on Ohio-grown food.  Increasing this to 10% would add $7 billion to local and regional economies.  Learn how we can be part of this shift as Dr. James Converse, manager of the Northside Farmers' Market, explains how to eat using farmers' markets and community-supported agriculture.
