President-elect Barack Obama promised Saturday to create the largest public works construction program since the inception of the interstate highway system a half-century ago as he seeks to put together a plan to resuscitate the reeling economy.

Mr. Obama's remarks showcased his ambition to expand the definition of traditional work programs for the middle class, like infrastructure projects to repair roads and bridges, to include new-era jobs in technology and so-called green jobs that reduce energy use and global warming emissions. "We need action — and action now," Mr. Obama said in an address broadcast Saturday morning on radio and YouTube.

Note if you will "to include new-era jobs in technology and so-called green jobs that reduce energy use and global emissions".

Obviously Mr. Obama and Congress ARE going to address the issues that Dennis is so concerned about.

Although Mr. Obama put no price tag on his plan, he said he would invest record amounts of money in the vast infrastructure program, which also includes work on schools, sewer systems, mass transit, electrical grids, dams and other public utilities. The green jobs would include various categories, including jobs dedicated to creating alternative fuels, windmills and solar panels; building energy efficient appliances, or installing fuel-efficient heating or cooling systems.

Congress can create jobs, cure global warming
Dec 2, 2008   Detroit News, Opinion
Rebuttal Congress can create jobs, cure global warming I had mixed reactions after reading the Nov. 16 editorial "Dingell's carbon plan serves economy best." On one hand, I agree that Congress should consider economic growth and job creation as it moves forward with legislation to reduce global warming pollution. But the whole point is we need to do both job creation and cure global warming. To stop global warming, a 6 percent reduction by 2020 is simply not enough. According to Nobel Prize-winning scientists, avoiding the worst affects of climate change requires that we cut global emissions by 25 percent to 40 percent by 2020. Serious climate legislation starts with serious emission reductions. And our economy will thrive under an aggressive carbon cap. We need to invest in a clean energy economy driven by new technology and powered by green jobs. I have witnessed how one Michigan factory can be converted from stamping car parts to stamping concentrated solar mirrors and panels. Imagine that sort of transformation economy-wide. Imagine the scale that the auto industry can bring to the solution of clean energy and jobs. With leadership from Congress, I have faith and well-founded confidence that America's innovators and our workers will indeed overcome the tough economic and environmental challenges we face.
