At the very least, does anyone know if the water in the Mahoning River has
been tested recently - and, if so - what the results of the test(s) were?

Rick Rowlands

I think there is still a do not contact warning from the EPA for the Mahoning River's water.  Probably would be a good idea for the Army Corpos of Engineers to finally dredge the river before doing a small shps review.

Has anyone considered a "small ships review" like they do on the Shenango River ...all proceeds going to charity?

Businesses or organizations build whacky  and hopefully river worthy ships and float by for the amusement of spectators.

For those who haven't seen pictures of the riverboat that ran up and down the Mahoning River, I have put a photo of it at my Webshots site.

That's fantastic!

You most likely don't remember, but right under the Spring Commns Bridge was located the Mahoning Riverboat Company that had a steamboat that ran up and down the Mahoning River shuttling folks to and from an amusement Park that was located upstream from Spring Commons. I have a photo of My Great Uncle on the good "ship" Youngstown that was operated back then.

Maby during the day of the celebration you could have a couple of boats to go up and down the river.

Defend Youngstown

Not a bad idea.

I plan to create a new event downtown (to be located on the Spring Commons Bridge where Ytown was founded) celebrating Youngstown's birthday (June 27th). Perhaps proceeds from the event can go toward the new monument?

Good idea.

What I had in mind though was a marble monument with the names of famous Yougstowners (See Rick's post for names) that would be a perminant tribute to all the folks that gained fame.

As new names are added there could be a celebration in their honor.

At the top of the monument should be the head of John Young (Smaller than the one at the John Young Memorial, and three flags should fly behind it (Youngstown's Flag, the State of Ohio Flag and the American Flag).

The list of all the famous Youngstowners is really large and covers the Arts, Politics, Business, Religion and Sports.

How perminant would a mural on a building last, and how often could it be updated?

Bob's mural is a good idea that should be followed up, but we should also seriously consider a monument as well.

A good location for the perminant monument could be at the Northwest corner of Wick and Wood Streets if the Board of Education would approve it.

Bob Barko just completed a new mural to the same effect. What about a 2-300ft version of it on placed on the Wean Factory building which is the factory building with broken windows on the left side of the Market St. bridge coming into downtown (hint, hint)?

That is a very impressive list indeed and one all of us should examine.

Our small corner of the world turned out greats in many fields that should be honored.

Thanks Rick, maby after looking over that lengthy list someone might be inspired to memorialize them in a very special way such as on a monument of fame.

Rick Rowlands

There is an impressive list of famous Youngstowners in the Wikipedia article about Youngstown.  I was suprised at some of the names.

A number of years ago a group drew up a list of famous Youngstowners and stars with their names were placed on downtown sidewalks.

What about a perminant monument that contained the names of famous Youngstowners based on a list compiled by the Historical Society that could be perminantly located in a nice spot in the downtown area.

The monument should be large enought so that new names could be added from time to time.
