James Ilgenfritz (San Diego) will be stopping in Youngstown during a cross-country tour, playing a small body of new works for solo contrabass that have been written for him by composers in California, Michigan, and New York. Composers include Gordon Beeferman, Steve Rush, Miller Puckette, Jeffrey Treviño, and Brian Griffeath-Loeb. At some events on this tour he will also be playing the music of Anthony Braxton and Iannis Xenakis, two composers whose work he has been researching during MA work at UCSD. (the) giants of gender are an experimental trio that formed during the summer of 2006 in Youngstown, Ohio. Improvisation is the core of their musical aesthetic and didactical practices. The instrumentation consists of Andy Meyer on woodwinds, Jenna Barvitski on violin and viola, and Kyle Farrell on percussion and vibraphone. The trio recently completed a national tour and performs often in the Cleveland and Columbus areas at art galleries, co-ops and other experimental music venues. Youngstown State University's Center for Contemporary Art, the McDonough Museum offers exhibitions in all media, experimental installations, performance, and regional out-reach programs to the public.
