The three houses south of 818 (between 818 and the Shagrin Building) have been demolished.  Grass has been planted on all three lots.

The three houses north of 818 are in the process of being rehabilitated.  One will be a wellness center and another may become some type of dining place.

Somewhere in Youngstown Memories I posted a Vindicator article about the Shagrin building when it was originally built that has a photo of the building for what it's worth if you have any interest in searching for it. Right now I'm up to my ears in projects that must take priority one for the present.

I did a little more investigating.  I compared the 1907 Sanborn map with the 1928 Sanborn map. (Thanks, Allan!)  I believe the red house was originally on Madison Ave.  They moved it to the back of the lot facing Elm, when they built the Shagrin Building.  But, interestingly, the 1928 map shows that the red house still had its porch.  So, the sidewalk in front of the Shagrin Building must have been very wide, until they widened Elm St.

I always wondered about this house - never saw the inside of it but always though it was interesting.
They MUST have widened Elm Street over the years... this place looked so strange with no front porch
and the door walled up.....

That's the one.

I'd be interested in the history of that house.  In it's day, I'm sure it was a "painted lady"  But, the fake stone that is on the first floor in that photo is newer than the Shagrin Building next door.  So, the house must have looked different between 1925, when we know the porch was gone because that's when the building next door was built, and the 1950/60s, when the fake stone was added.

Google street-view in this area is from 2011.  This block has improved quite a bit, since then. (thanks, in large part, to Commonwealth)  The only 2 houses demolished were the purple one just visible in the far left of the above photo, and the red one next to the building Dorian Books is in.  There are no other houses on this block that need to come down.

There are at least three houses in that block that need to be torn down. I hope that 818 looks a lot better both outside and inside. Way back when, that use to be Edwards Florest and Gift Shop before they moved to their current location. I also hope that they spruced up the inside considering they are selling food.
