Yes we did when we found that the city was hopeless.  There is no point in wasting money running candidates in races they have no chance of winning.

AllanY2525

Sounds like a classic case of  "Pi°° and moan"...... they pi°°  on their own party/candidate(s), then moan
about how badly the Democrats are running things.....

That is no excuse, none whatever, any political party MUST continuously  recruit new supporters, and NEVER write off any part of the county. NO political party can afford to be stagnet. THAT IS AN ABSOLUTE FACT. The leadership of the Mahoning GOP is not only FAILING the people of Youngstown, but it is also FAILING the national party by writing off the city and that my friend is UNFORGIVEABLE.
Is it a case of racism? No because there are Black and Hispanics active in the party in Mahoning County, BUT it is the FAULT of the local leadership and the way they do business in recruting members and candidates.
When they get a good candidate for a city office, how do they support him or her? In the Primary, the candidate MUST foot 100% of the bill, and during the General Election, the party may or may not help the candidate financially. ONLY when a person wins several times will the leadership give them the kind of support they need.
That is NOT the way a party should be run. BUT that is the way that it's been run since Jack Hunter was Mayor.

Why is the Republican party is almost nonexistent in Youngstown.

In my opinion, most of the republicans moved to the suburbs years ago.

AllanY2525

I'm an independent and everyone keeps saying that the Republican party is almost nonexistent in
Youngstown.

My questions are:

Why?

and

What is the Republican  party leadership doing ABOUT this situation?  One would think that if they had a
platform that addressed the needs and concerns of their constituents then people would VOTE for them(?)

The distence between the Democratic Party and the Green Party is 100,000,000 light years. Just consider their position on oil here in the valley. Consider their so-called CITIZENS BILL OF RIGHTS.
Both the Democrats and Republicans support drilling ... true, they take different approaches, but those approaches ultamately reach the same end, and the valley benefits fromit. The green Party is 100% opposed to it in any way, shape or form.
These are just two examples. I'm sure that others can add more.

Billy Mumphrey

Towntalk: what principles of the Green Party are retrogressive? From what I have found on the internet they have very liberal ideas.

Going backwards.
Causing a return to an earlier and usually worse state
a: going or directed backward
b: declining from a better to a worse state
c: passing from a higher to a lower level of organization

Billy Mumphrey

Towntalk: What do you mean by retrogressive? You lost me.

No offense Billy, but the Green Party is retrogressive in its principals and in no way a good substitute for the Democrats. What party brought us out of the Depression ... the Democrats regardless of how you may think about the methods. Which party led us through two world wars ... the Democrats.

I'm an independent Democrat who very seldem votes a streight Democratic ticket, and I do not base my decision on who I'll vote for from campaign flyers, but do my own independent study of candidates and issues, and shy away from candidates who come to me with a grin all over their face and the glad hand out because I know that five minutes later the candidate won't know me from any other voter.
And by the way, I don't trust any candidate or office holder ... the burden of proof is theirs to convince me.

Billy Mumphrey

From what I have read on the internet regarding political parties, would not the Green Party be a better fit for those dis-satisfied with the Democrats?

jay

QuoteWould this be a good time to court some of the Black leaders by the Republican Chairman?

For the most part, the republican party does not exist in Youngstown.  The republicans don't have a single candidate in the city's November election.

Seeing this political vacuum, independents are now starting to run for office.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

When any man imagines he is necessary for the success of any undertaking he is ready for the pink slip. This applies to party's as well as men.

Rick Rowlands

When one party is in total control for too long, they don't care what they do as they know the people will continue to blindly vote for the "D".   Our inept local politics is due to blind allegiance to one party.
