North Side Citizens' Coalition To Renovate Homes

The North Side Citizens' Coalition has embarked on an ambitious program to renovate several homes in the Wick Park Model Neighborhood. With the help of a small grant from the Youngstown Community Development Agency, work on  renovating at least four homes should start in a few weeks.  The Wick Park Model Neighborhood encompasses the ten block historic district east of Wick Park.  The District is bordered by Broadway Avenue to the north, Wick Avenue to the east, Madison Avenue to the south, and Elm Street to the west.

If you are able to help with this project, need information , or are interested in the homes, please contact

This Arts and Crafts style house is actually two houses in one!  The front half of it was built onto an Italianate house existing in the back, around the turn of the twentieth century.  Some elements indicative of this return to the craftsmanship period are:  the heavy, beamed, crossed arches on the covered porch; rafter extensions; squared dormer and eaves brackets; shingled exterior; dressed stone foundation; tripartite windows and broad chimneys.  The house is on the near north side.

This north side house has three floors and 2 staircases for each floor.  Greek Revival in style with some Georgian influences, it originally had a full length open porch with four Doric columns and two pilasters.  It has keystone-shaped sandstone lintels, and also stone window sills.  The front door is flanked by matching, full length side lights.  The window sashes have six to ten divided lights in the top, with a single pane below.  The third floor gable ends have complete (triangular) pediments, adorned with crown molding.  The overall material is enduring buff-colored brick.

It is hoped that the Wick Park Model Neighborhood project will serve as a template that the other three sides of town could use for the revitalization of their areas.[/size][/b]
