Get ready for a passionate mob to gather at 14 State Street in Struthers. Mahoning Valley Cash Mob has announced its April Cash Mob Event winner: Bartell's Cupcakery. The Mahoning Valley Cash Mobsters are scheduled to appear between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21st. Josh Bartell and his staff are ready — and eagerly waiting.

This kind of mob is more than welcome, as one of the popular "cash mobs" that are growing in presence across the United States. Far from an angry mob, we are instead compassionate and loyal to small business owners in our own communities. Town residents have joined together with Mahoning Valley Cash Mob to support local owned independent businesses, mobbing a chosen store on a specified day and time, with cash in hand. Each person commits to spending up to $20.00 in the store that day.

According to Wikipedia, cash mobs began in Buffalo, New York, back in August of 2011, when a blogger and engineer organized over 100 people to shop at the same time in a local wine store. Just three months later, the state of Ohio jumped on the early bandwagon after an attorney in Cleveland organized a cash mob at a bookstore. The phenomenon has since spread to at least 32 states and Canada.

The event in Struthers hopes to bring attention to the need for communities to support one another and bring the business back home through its Entrepreneurial Fund, as well as to support Bartell's Cupcakery on this one particular day. In addition to the cash infusion from shoppers at the bakery, Josh Bartell, the Owner of Bartell's Cupcakery has agreed to donate 10% of his net profit for the entire day's sales (which means he is not only donating 10% of his profit from cupcakes purchased by MVCM members, but he is also donating those of all customers for the entire day) to Mahoning Valley Cash Mob's Entrepreneurial Fund. What Is Mahoning Valley Cash Mob's Entrepreneurial Fund?

Mahoning Valley Cash Mob wants to tap into, foster, and help an enterprising person who plans to open a locally owned independent business in one of the four counties we currently service become a bona fide business. In the VERY near future, we will accept applications from budding entrepreneurs with sound business plans that may need some assistance getting launched. Our members will then have an opportunity to vote on the candidate that has the best idea, best plan, and best chance of survival. This is a hand up, not a hand out. For every dollar the winning applicant has, MVCM will contribute a dollar. As soon as the new business begins to make a net profit we ask that the new business owner contribute 10% of his/her net profit to MVCM for the life of their business so that MVCM can continue assisting other budding entrepreneurs to get the same assistance. Monies generated by and for MVCM will be used by MVCM for the advancement of this new program.

How Will Mahoning Valley Cash Mob's Entrepreneurial Fund Work?

The Entrepreneurial Fund was created on March 28, 2012. Once MVCM's funds build up, MVCM will begin accepting applications from budding entrepreneurs. They will need to submit their ideas, business plan, etc in order to be considered. Applications will be reviewed by our Administrators and upon acceptance we will have our members take a vote on which potential entrepreneur has the best overall plan and chance of survival. MVCM's Entrepreneurial Fund will match dollar for dollar the amount needed to have a soft opening. If an applicant needs $5000, we'll match $2500. They'll need to come up with the difference. Upon their grand opening it is hoped our members will be present to support the new business. In return for MVCM helping the new business get its start, the new business will be expected to contribute 10% of their net profit each month for the life of their business to the Entrepreneurial Fund so that MVCM can help the next budding entrepreneur. Additionally, if in the future the new business owner has an unexpected and unavoidable situation not related to gross negligence, the business owner can apply to MVCM for assistance. Basically, this is their bailout not unlike the ones that national franchises and conglomerates receive when they fall prey to the unexpected and unavoidable situations.
