The Cask of Amontillado
The Cask of Amontillado, by Edgar Allan Poe, is a criminal's account of a crime committed fifty years earlier, a crime of which he was never convicted but which he now confesses. Montresor tells the story of the night that he took his revenge on Fortunato, a fellow nobleman. Angry over some unspecified insult, he plots to murder his friend during Carnival when the man is drunk, dizzy, and wearing a jester's motley. Like several of Poe's other stories, and in keeping with the 19th-century fascination with the subject, the narrative revolves around a person being buried aliveāin this case, by being entombed in a wall.
