Ans:

Perlee Brush was the first recorded school teacher and the school was a one story log building located on the square.

Source: 20th Century History of Youngstown and Mahoning County, Ohio – Thomas Sanderson - pg. 376

Cf. History of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, Ohio – J. G. Butler, Jr. – pg. 114.

Note: There is some disagreement as to the exact location of that first school and the date it was opened. Sanderson has 1805 and Butler has 1802. Sanderson has it on the Square where the Soldiers Monument now stands while Butler has it on the South-west corner of the Square, but both agree that Brush was the first teacher.

At page 23 of the Historical Collections of the Mahoning Valley published in 1876 by the MVHS the school was placed on the South-west corner of the Square and agrees with Butler as to the date so we should take this as the correct location of the first school.
