Title: Shooting In The Garden District
Post by: jay on June 10, 2010, 06:28:33 AM
I didn't realize until this morning that the recent shooting on the west side was in the Garden District.

Side Question
Do teens in that area routinely play (block) the street?
Maybe it's time to make a neighborhood playground.

The shooting was not in the Garden District, technically.  Our northern border is Mahoning Ave. and the shooting happened on N. Lakeview.

But, to answer your question, yes, it's common for kids to play in the streets.  While finishing work on our grant project last night, there were teens playing basketball in the parking lot behind St. John's, so there are facilities available for playing basketball. (And kids routinely play in the open field at the corner of S. Lakeview and Mayfield.)  However, playing in the street isn't necessarily the problem anyway.  It's the lack of respect shown by not moving out of the way for traffic.

I just wanted to quickly add that we welcome anyone from the surrounding neighborhoods to attend our meetings. (our next meeting is Tuesday June 15th at 6:30 at the Davis Center)  But our boundaries remain important for things like the art district, grants, cleanups, etc..
