The unemployment rate for Mahoning County has now risen to 13.2%.
All the more reason we need new blue-green jobs, companies, and industries to relocate in the valley.
All the more reason we need single-payer health system in place in Ohio.
All the more reason we need better education funding in place in Ohio.
All the more reason to vote for Green Party candidates in November 2010!
The current political leaders in Columbus and Washingron have dropped the ball.....
In other words, Don't complain about the lemons you've been handed, make some green lemonade!
Youngstown and Mahoning County need jobs, period. I wouldn't care if they were
green, blue or even flaming pink... just get more businesses into the area, and the jobs
that come with them.
Single-payer health care doesn't put bread on the table. Get the jobs first, then
worry about how to pay for health care afterwards. If people have no jobs, how are
they going to be able to pay any kind of insurance premiums, public or not ?
Education funding is great - but where are our young people going to *work* after
they get out of school? A great education, with no job opportunities to put it to
work at a job that pays a decent wage, is basically meaningless in the local area.
If there are no decent jobs awaiting grads, they will simply look elsewhere - and leave
the area for better opportunities.
You can't blame the politicians for everything....although sometimes I myself would
like to... LOL
:)
:) DITTO :) to Allan's observation.
We can talk about Green Red Yellow and Blue jobs from here to eternity, but talk isn't going to put so much as a crumb of bread on a hungry child's plate, or a thread of clothing on their back.
We all know about the jobs that could be created through Green thinking ... certainly Dennis has kept us appraised of the possabilities, but who with the power to act on those possabilities around here is listening?
There aren't many Tod's, Wicks, Andrews, if any who are in a position to create new industries, and we simply can't expect Washington to step in and plunk down thirty bags of money and tell us to build a new company and hire enough local folks so that the unemployment figures go down by a substantial number.
You know, every other corner of the country is also looking at green jobs to be their savior, and guess what, we will never be able to compete with much of the country.
Great Depression A Diary, of all the books that I have read about economics thru the decades, this book has opened my eyes the most on where we are heading. And the diary was about Youngstown in the 30's. Sadly, we are heading to complete third world status, I grew up in a third world country, I know it when I see it.
What to do? innovate, we cannot recreate existing industry, our regulations render us uncompetitive. Innovation, invention is the only way out. Create industry wherein there is no competition.
We have to innovate and create new industries and profit from them until government has a chance to catch up and regulate them out of existence, or make the price of admission so high that only the big money can participate.
Rick, you need to join an Optimist Club....
Yet another reason why the DEMOCRATS have FAILED THE MAHONING VALLEY!
Gosh Darn, I remember Dubya Bush on the Y-Town Airport Tarmac in 2004 promising jobs to the valley...
Never saw them jobs come this way.....
Vote Green in 2010!
The Democrats have promised jobs, and will again.
The Republicans have promised jobs, and will again.
The Green Party is promising jobs...
Do I see a pattern?
The pattern is... why the hell are we looking to GOVERNMENT to provide jobs?
The pattern is that conservatives don't want government to create jobs because those jobs usually help the poor....who then form unions....who then become a voting bloc against the conservatives.
Conservatives don't want equality.....they want the poor to stay poor so they can't or won't go to the polls.....
Conservatives advocate policies that hurt the most people.
Conservatives win because they exploit the racial division of our land.
Greens advocate policies that help people....
And it was the Democrats that pushed through NAFTA, WTO, GATT and are pushing for a North American version of the European Union.
It was also the Democrats that helped kill the American steel industry under Jimmy Carter.
Correct, and the Green Party opposes NAFTA,GATT, and the WTO........

Wow, I never heard this argument before, what a spin from the truth.
Most of us Americans do not know what poor is. I will tell you this, the real poor do not have free heat, free food, free electric, free housing, free hospitalization, etc. No, the poor of the world look at our so called poor as wealthy-they cross deserts to be our new poor.
The trick is : if you want to be elected, go to the entitled voting block and offer them more entitlements and you have that voting block. What the ignorant do not see is that the payola money is now being printed and is backed by zero. So, we now are really going to see what being poor is in the next decade.

I'm sorry, did you just call conservatives racists?
Shut your mouth fool.
If I heard that on other boards that I write on your ears would be burning for months.
That has got to be the stupidest thing you have ever posted and you've posted plenty to compare it to.
During his run for president in 1976, Ronald Reagan coined the term "welfare queen", after grossly exaggerating a case of welfare fraud in Chicago. He didn't mention the woman's race, he didn't need to.
When Reagan started his 1980 campaign for President, He began his campaign with a speech on state's rights near a fairground in Philadelphia, Mississippi, the town where 3 civil rights workers were murdered in 1964. Everyone got the message.
I usually don't get into this kind of discussion - however I rather recall specifically that it was Presidents Nixon and Ford that signed the papers that made it OK for Lykes (sp?) to buy Youngstown Sheet and Tube despite the disapproval of both the Attorney General and the Secretary of Labor which certainly didn't HELP the steel industry one bit. The end result did happen under President Carter's Watch - however it was all set up way before the actual happening. If I am at all or some what wrong can someone set me straight ? I would appreciate others point of view.

And this makes conservatives racists? You need to get the hell out of the education business. My apologies to any I might offend but this fool needs to shut the hell up. And that's using my mildest language.
Reagan exaggerating about a woman who was guilty of welfare fraud does not make conservatives racist.
Racial discord plays a critical role in determining beliefs about the poor. Since minorities are highly represented amongst the poorest americans, any income-based redistribution measures will redistribute particularly to minorities. The opponents of redistribution have regularly used race based rhetoric to fight left-wing policies.
---Alesnia, Glaeser, Sacerdote: 3 Harvard economists who conclude race is the most important factor in America's lack of a western European welfare state, 2001.
Please keep this thread civil without name calling. It is getting hot in here.
THANK YOU
And BTW - Thanks Kenny Jo for questioning the timeframes ... seems many times a president will get blamed for not being able to rectify issues that previous administrations put into motion.
