NUMBER 7 FIRE STATION SOLD TO DEVELOPER

Doesn't this seem like an excessively high price for this property?
Will this fire station be replaced and a new one built nearby?
I like the idea to use the money to replace Station 7 and Station 9. I'm not very familiar with Station 7, but as for Station 9, it's far past time to replace it, and I don't care where it goes, Ipes Field, the old Jolly Joes, where ever, but lets get a new one.
Speaking of Jolly Joes, did it ever reopen?
i was told he fixing it up in a piecemeal rate.
I hope the money is still there for a new North Side Station to replace Sta 7 and a new Southeast station to replace Sta 9 in 3 years. I know that the property and blueprints are already ready to go for a new Station 9 on Shady Run at Pemberton Park. They just need the funding and council OK to start breaking ground.
There has been talk since the 1990's about building a new station and combining Sta 1 downtown and Sta 7 near Wick and the Madison Ave Expressway. There was also talk of buying a mansion near Wick Park and turning it into a fire station and offices but that didn't fly to well with anyone and the idea was quickly dropped.
Personally, I would like to see two identical stations built for Sta 9 on Shady Run and Sta 7 and move Sta 7 a little farther up the N. side. Wonder if they will keep the Sta 7 and 9 designations down the road or if they will become Sta 4 and 5.
I'm saddened to hear about the eventual loss of Sta 7 but at the same time excited at the though of having some change occur with the YFD!
I'm kind of sad to see Station 7 go also, but it's for the public good... and YSU needs more student
housing anyways...
Towntalk told me once that Station 7 used to have a third floor, and that the station has burned once
in the past - which is probably why there is no third floor anymore... lol
How ironic to have a fire station catch fire....
:)
Correct, Station 7 use to have 3 floors. I know of one fire for sure that broke out on the 3rd floor locker area in 1908 which damaged the third floor section. According to newspaper and FD annual reports, the third floor was repaired.
Several people I've talked to believe that the 3rd floor was removed sometime in the 1940's after a second fire but no one seems to know exactly when and I can't find any documentation to prove or disprove the date or cause.
I think it looks pretty cool now, but WOW, it was really great back then! Thanks for the picture.
No problem. Always glad to share fire department history if I know it :)
I've attached a copy of the map showing where the new Sta 9 was going to be built prior to the city budget issues. Midlothian Blvd is off the bottom side of the map.
