A chart on Wikipedia says the nationwide shortage of RN's in 2000 was 6%.  The projected shortage for 2020 was about 38%.

The two largest contributing factors were aging Baby Boomers and not enough educators to teach the incoming nurses.

The shortage also varies by location.  Some areas(liked Des Moines, IA) have a surplus of nurses, while others have a shortage.
